Andrew Helmholdt , DVM
Dr. Andrew W. Helmholdt became co-owner of Portage Animal Hospital in August 2005. He is a 1991 cum laude graduate of Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine. His practice experiences have included Chicago, Grand Rapids, and Kalamazoo. He has special interests in cardiology/thoracic disease and performs echocardiographs regularly. In addition, he has a special interest in orthopedics and soft tissue surgery, dentistry, and general/internal medicine. His family includes his wife, Tonya, and daughters, Hannah and Olivia. They share their home with five cats, Bella, Mimi, Chin Chin, Little Miss, and Hope, their dog Ellie, and Billy the Rabbit.
Dr. Cyndi (Rieden) Lunney became co-owner of Portage Animal Hospital in August 2005. After earning a Bachelor’s degree from Kalamazoo College in 1991, she received her DVM summa cum laude from Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1996. She practiced in Benton Harbor for two years followed by seven years in Grand Rapids. Her interests include internal medicine, feline medicine, and ultrasound. Dr. Lunney’s family includes her husband, Michael, son, Tim, and daughter, Rachel, as well as her cats, Maple, Oreo, Camo, and Rocko and dog Hooch.
Dr. Janine Chapman graduated summa cum laude from Michigan State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine in 1998. She began her career as a mixed-animal practitioner in Battle Creek where she had the pleasure of working with animals of all kinds. She settled in to the Kalamazoo area four years later focusing on companion animals. She has a strong interest in surgery, ophthalmology and ultrasound. At home, she is supervised closely by two rescue cats – Kiwi Fruit and Walter. In her free time, she enjoys SCUBA diving with her husband and son, dog agility, travel and triathlons. Dr. Chapman is elated to be part of the Portage Animal Hospital Care Team and is looking forward to meeting a whole new family of clientele.
Mary Anne N.
Mary Anne is the newest addition to the staff at Portage Animal Hospital. She is being shy and will update her bio soon.
Christy has been with Portage Animal Hospital since the Spring of 2007, serving in various roles in our front office. Her current role is that of Inventory Manager. When she is not making sure all is going smoothly at the clinic, she enjoys being at home with her husband, two children, dogs Chloe and Tido, and Kiara the Cat.
Front Desk Team
Susan brings years of experience to Portage Animal Hospital, having worked as a techinican, an assistant, as well as a receptionist for clinics around West Michigan. When she is not spending time helping our clients she enjoys hiking and travelling with her two dogs while her cats guard the fish tank at home.
Diane comes to Portage Animal Hospital after working as a receptionist in the dental field. She enjoys seeing all of our clients and patients, making sure that they are well taken care of while they are with us. At home, she enjoys spending time with her husband while trying to keep her dogs Tony and Ruby out of her knitting.
Nicole S. , LVT
Nicole has been a member of the Portage Animal Hospital staff since November 2010. She grew up in London, Ontario and moved to Battle Creek, MI in 1996. Nicole graduated from the Veterinary Technology Program at Michigan State in September 2010. In her free time, Nicole enjoys playing with her boxer-lab mix, Meeko and her cat, Annie.
Kristin B. , LVT
Kristin joined Portage Animal Hospital in June 2011. She has been working in the veterinary field for ten years and has experience in general and emergency medicine. In June of 2009, she graduated Magna Cum Lauded from Baker College with an Associate’s degree in Veterinary Technology. Kristin lives in Schoolcraft with her husband and dog, Bubba, an American Bulldog. In her spare time, she enjoys running, gardening and relaxing in the sun.
Jessyca B., LVT
Jessyca has spent most of her life caring for animals, beginning with lab puppies and everything they found when she was growing up. Since the Fall of 2013, she has been making sure our patients get high quality care at Portage Animal Hospital. Outside of work she enjoys spending time outdoors with her husband and son.
Amy brings her love of animals to Portage Animal Hospital while she cares for our boarding and hospitalized animals. Outside of animals, her passion is football, specifically the exploits of a certain #18 who recently moved from the Midwest to the Mile High City.
Britches & Bangles , Greeters
Bangles and Britches joined the staff of PAH in the October 2006. They showed up on the doorstep with another mama cat and five kittens. All of the kittens and other mama cat were adopted, and Bangles and Britches stayed here with us! They were dropped off in a cardboard box, which was all wet from the rain. Bangles and Britches are the PAH greeters, and they are always sure to say hello to our wonderful clients!
